Honoring Ludmilla Chiriaeff and Her Legacy
To mark the centenary of Ludmilla Chiriaeff (1924?1996), the founder of l?cole suprieure de ballet du Qubec and Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, a heartfelt tribute is being held. Chiriaeff is celebrated for her significant contributions to dance education and development in Canada, and her life story?from her early years in Berlin, through the trials of World War II, to her new home in Canada?is remembered through the artistry of those she influenced. The event features a performance of Balanchine?s The Four Temperaments, which explores the classical idea of the four humours through its striking choreography and minimalist design. Following this is Ginette Laurin?s Funambule, known for its unique fusion of ballet and theatrical elements. James Kudelka?s Dsir combines classical and contemporary dance, set to Prokofiev?s music, examining themes of love and relationships. Lastly, Jean Grand-Matre presents Continuum, reflecting on Chiriaeff?s legacy while showcasing the talent of a new generation of dancers. This celebration highlights Chiriaeff?s enduring impact on Canadian ballet.
